JESUS WEPT

What does the saying Jesus wept mean?
Because Jesus wept he reminds us of the reality of death. Even though he knew Lazarus would rise again, he still felt the painful emotions associated with the passing of a good friend. Jesus' tears also remind us of God's goodness.

Several months ago, I preached a message on the tears of Jesus. Our Savior was a “man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief”

(Isaiah 53:5). But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

What does Isaiah 53 verse 5 mean?
The phrase “with his stripes we are healed” (verse 5) means that because of Jesus Christ's suffering we can be healed from the wounds of our sins and the consequences of the Fall of Adam and Eve, including spiritual and physical death.

What does it mean by Jesus stripes we are healed?
Thousands of Christians use this passage to state that Jesus' work on the cross was not only for sin but also for sickness. They believe the healing this passage speaks of is referring to an immediate physical healing not only spiritual healing. They believe this healing can be applied now by faith.

This is more than mere emotionalism or shallow sentimentality – it is a reminder that He cares and that He carries our burdens.

There are three times in Scripture that Jesus wept
1. John 11:35; Jesus wept

What is the meaning of John 11 35?
John 11:35 Reminds Us God Empathizes with Our Pain

We have a God who has come to us. He knows what it means to be greatly troubled. He is able to identify and empathize with our hurt. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life. We know that in Christ we will be with God forever.

What is the meaning of Jesus wept?
Jesus wept because He experienced and understood the same feelings as the people around Him. The Lord Jesus lived a perfect life, overcoming sin, suffering, and even death itself despite being clothed in flesh and subject to human weaknesses. Despite living a perfect life, standing before a tomb, He cried.

2. Luke 19:41; As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it
3. Hebrews 5:7-9 During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death

Each is near the end of His life and each reveals what matters most to our loving God. He truly is “touched with the feeling of our infirmities”
(Hebrews 4:15). For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

What does Hebrews 4:15 mean? [⇑ See verse text ⇑] The central figure of the Christian faith is not a remote, distant deity. Nor is it some flawed, mortal figure. Instead, the "founder" of our salvation is one who has experienced all of our temptations and did so without falling into sin.

His tears are a reminder that He loves sinners and cares for every soul.
